Nika Kutateladze - LILI
The Perimeter, 20 Brownlow Mews, London WC1N 2LE, United Kingdom
11 June - 25 July, 2026
Bukia Vakhania is pleased to present LILI, Nika Kutateladze’s solo show at The Perimeter, London, the final exhibition in a series of programming held at the neighbouring Blue Lion pub. This presentation will be the culmination of Kutateladze’s residency period at The Perimeter, where he has developed a new body of paintings alongside a site-responsive installation.
Kutateladze’s practice explores migration, looking at the rural mountain villages of the Guria region in his native Georgia. Depicted through imagery of abandoned houses, found materials, animals and ghostlike human figures, his work investigates the instability of memory, disappearance and the fragile bond between people and the places they leave behind.
Taking its title from a common female name in Kutateladze’s family village, LILI tells the story of a town vacated by women - a familiar socioeconomic reality in the depopulating regions of rural Georgia. Rooted in individual narratives from his hometown, each work functions as chapters within a broader imaginary on masculinity, emigration and displacement. The exhibition is grounded by an architectural installation using repurposed materials from the building’s interior, where paintings depict intimate portraits of men, exploring their connection and relationship between one another and the surrounding landscape.
Nika Kutateladze was born in 1989 in Tbilisi, Georgia, where he lives and works. He completed his Masters education at the Centre of Contemporary Art, Tbilisi (CCA-T) in 2013. Prior to that he studied on the faculty of Architecture at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts between 2007 and 2011.
His practice predominately comprises installation and sculpture, reflecting on day-to-day consumerism and environmental issues. His works challenge the transformative process of architectural spaces and urban environment. Over the past few years, Kutateladze has expanded his practice to include painting. Working with oil on grounded wood drawing on the tradition of Orthodox iconography and, more recently, in oil on canvas, his paintings reflect on the everyday relationships of people living side by side in rural communities.
Kutateladze has had solo exhibitions at Mendes Wood DM, New York; Modern Art, London; Vitrine, London and Gallery Artbeat, Tbilisi. His works have been included in exhibitions at Chateau La Coste, Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, France (2025); MAISON DES ARTS GEORGES & CLAUDE POMPIDOU, Cajarc, France (2024); CCA, Berlin, Germany (2024); Oxygen Biennial, Tbilisi, Georgia (2021); Foundation Cartier, Paris (2019); Tbilisi Architectural Biennial, Tbilisi, Georgia (2018); Kunsthalle Tbilisi, Georgia (2018); Centre of Contemporary Art Tbilisi, Georgia (2013) among others.
